20,000 acres of Irvine Co. land has been offered to Orange County, as a gift.  The land must be kept undeveloped as park and wildlife sanctuary land.  Some environmentalists are speaking out, saying the county does not have the funds to maintain such a parcel. WHOLE STORY

California workers have been making do with whatever is available to them in 2009.  A recent finding by the state Employment Development Department shows an 83% uptick in people looking for full-time work and having to settle only for part-time.  The EDD survey shows 1,443,000 part-time workers in Sept of 09, up from 840,000 last September.  WHOLE STORY

In an effort to get young people interested in math and science, the Discovery Science Center sponsored a “pumpkin launch” in Fullerton.  One group created a “pumpkin lobber” cannon to propel pumpkins through plywood targets 50 yards away.  The pressurized air used to fire the pumpkin exceeded expectations and shot a pumpkin 120 yards and through the stadium scoreboard.  WHOLE STORY

SCC’s public works program has a good reputation but state budget cuts have kept improvements at bay.  A $10,000 grant offered by the Grainger Foundation will create a mini-conference center to be used for the school’s California Code Enforcement Officer training.  WHOLE STORY
