Taking time to learn from and with people from the generations that preceded and follow us often gets put off for later …or never.  However, when we sit down and listen to one another, the treasure store of knowledge and value sharing can be invaluable.  The Pacific Symphony believes one way to bring together the generations in this way is through music.  Tom Brokaw, author of, “The Greatest Generation” and other works relating to the subject, agrees.

Cindy Abbott and her husband, Larry, are adventurous by nature.  So, when afflicted with a rare circulatory disease called Wegener’s granulomatosis, it was not out of character for Abbott to decide to fight the pain with adventure.  Chemotherapy treatments are available but Cindy Abbott has decided to train hard and pursue a strenuous climb up Mt Everest instead. THE GREATEST GENERATION

Students from the Orange County High School of the Arts film and TV conservatory have partnered with the Pacific Symphony to create documentary shorts that hope to bring experiences of those in the “greatest generation” to younger audiences.  The shorts will be shown during the festival concerts. While it is not the first event to take place as part of the festival, “The Greatest Generation” is the core of this year’s ACF. Taking place Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 4-6, 2010, in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, this concert features Carl St.Clair leading the orchestra and the Pacific Chorale in Daugherty’s world premiere, “Mount Rushmore for Chorus and Orchestra,” commissioned by Pacific Symphony.  ABOUT THE MUSIC

Author, The Greatest Generation

Tom Brokaw, a native of South Dakota, graduated from the University of South Dakota with a degree in political science.  He began his journalism career in Omaha and Atlanta before joining NBC News in 1966.  Brokaw was the White House correspondent for NBC news during Watergate, and from 1976-1981 he anchored Today on NBC.  He was the sole anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw from 1983-2004.  He lives in New York and Montana and will be celebrating his 70th birthday on Saturday.  Tom’s mother, Jean, lives in Laguna Woods and his brother and family live in Dana Point.
