Behind Mission Jewelers in San Juan Capistrano, there was an empty storefront that played host to a well-planned burglary. The robbers drilled a hole through the shared wall of the empty shop and jewelry store, dismantled the electronic monitoring equipment and made their way out with a large safe holding upwards of $1Million in jewels. Ashlee Krol believed her Miss Newport Beach 2009 tiara would bring her local appearances and a chance for the Miss USA crown. UCI and University of Oxford researchers and some business colleagues have created a breed of mosquitoes that could help stem the transmission of dengue fever. The female of the breed cannot fly and are expected to die quickly in the wild, therefore hopefully keeping transmission of the disease at bay. Male mosquitoes of this breed can fly but do not carry dengue. WHOLE STORY
Working wardrobes, a homegrown Orange County organization, is providing a night of sequins and fun for teens from low-income families. The JF Shea Therapeutic Riding Center has helped numbers of disabled children and adults over the years in with trailers and semi-permanent facilities. Now, a 21,000 sq foot Therapy Building will be utilized to operate horse related classes to help encourage social interaction, coordination, self-confidence and independence through physical rehabilitation. Executive Director – Shea Center for Therapeutic Riding
Dana Butler-Moburg has served as executive director for the Shea Center for Therapeutic Riding in San Juan Capistrano for the past ten years. In the last nine years, the Shea Center has quadrupled revenue to over $2 million budget, doubled clients to over 500 clients annually with approximately 50 varying disabilities and doubled the size of their staff. With twelve full-time staff and seven part-time and contract staff, the Shea Center is one of the largest therapeutic equestrian centers in the country. For Butler-Moburg, a fourth level dressage rider, joining the Shea Center was the perfect combination of a personal love of horses and a professional desire to provide meaningful services to the community.
