Lance MacLean, mayor of Mission Viejo until yesterday, will decide by next week whether or not to call for a recount in the election that recalled him from his mayor- ship by 19 votes.  MacLean has been fighting rumors and accusations of “uncivil behaviors” and fiscal irresponsibility.  David Leckness, a Democrat and businessman has been chosen to replace MacLean.  WHOLE STORY

Since January 25 when a new state law allowing for early release of prisoners came into effect, 295 inmates have been released from Orange County jails.  Inmates are now offered “credits” for good behavior and completion of special projects to reduce sentences.  The legislation exempts those previously convicted and serving time for murder, rape, kidnapping, assault with a firearm or arson or those who would be required to register as sex offender from early release.  Officials are leery of how the new law will affect the crime rate.  WHOLE STORY

Shelly Lyn Doan was shot and subdued by less-than-lethal weapons after chasing her boyfriend around the house with a kitchen knife and then holding herself from police for more than six hours.  A SWAT team surrounded her complex and evacuated the neighbors in order to safely end the standoff.  The boyfriend has not been found.  WHOLE STORY

David Emmes and Martin Benson started South Coast Repertory with $17, and a vision.  Now, after forty-six years, the duo has decided to step aside to allow new leadership to move the Costa Mesa theater company into the future.  The award-winning directors will have a say in the choosing of a new artistic director, along with the board of trustees.  WHOLE STORY
